Looking to decrease your reliance on the gird and use more renewable energy? Adding a solar battery storage system, aka solar batteries allows you store electricity generated throughout the day for use later on in the evening or at a later date. This is turn means you can use more renewable energy on a daily basis, significantly reducing grid reliance. Based in Warwickshire? Intolec can install solar batteries alongside solar panels or to an existing system.

How does a solar battery storage system work?

A solar battery storage system, also known as solar power storage, works by storing excess energy generated from your solar panels throughout the day. This allows you to use that energy later in the evening – typically this is when homeowners use the most electricity. It also means you can run your home on renewable energy even when the sun is asleep…pretty cool right?

A solar power storage system uses two main battery types. Lithium-ion and lead-acid. Lithium-ion batteries although more expensive, tend to have a longer lifespan and have a slightly higher energy density meaning they can store more energy.

When the sun is shining, the solar cells in the panels convert sunlight into energy using direct current (DC). This generated energy then knocks on the inverter’s door who then converts the direct current into alternating current (AC). This alternating current can then be used to power our homes. Another great plus to solar batteries is if the electricity demand in your home is less than the energy generated, the direct current energy can be recycled and used to charge the batteries themselves. Overnight when no energy is being absorbed, your solar batteries provide power to your devices meaning you’re still utilising your solar panels long into the night.

Can I add a solar battery to existing PV setup?

A big question we are asked as solar PV installers is “Can I add a solar battery to existing PV setup?” The answer to this is simple…Yes you can, and you should! Adding a solar power storage system to an existing PV set up is pretty and well worth the investment. There is multiple battery sizes available depending on the size of your existing solar PV system – our installers will be able to advise you on this in more detail during an initial visit.

How much does a solar battery cost?

As solar batteries have become more common, the cost has dramatically decreased. Compared to the cost of solar panels themselves it’s well worth the additional cost. The cost of your solar battery will vary things like system size and battery capacity will play a part. For a more accurate cost estimation get in touch with Intolec, your solar PV experts today.

Where are solar batteries fitted?

Thankfully, solar batteries have become lighter and smaller over the years meaning they can be installed in more locations – providing they are relatively protected. Solar batteries are typically installed in lofts, garages, under the stairs and can even be placed outside in sheltered spots. It all depends what space we have to work with.

How big are solar batteries?

As previously mentioned, solar batterie are now relatively small. A single solar battery is no bigger than a small suitcase. Typically, to sufficiently home your solar battery system you will need just over one metre in width and around one and a half metres in height. This will be enough space for the inverter and batteries.
